Photographer Ruben Van Schalm: “I really like shooting in nature, but I like the darkness as well”
04 abr, 2016
Hello Ed, thank you for welcoming me to the World of Models family. Short storyline about me. For those who not know me, my name is Ruben van Schalm born and raised in The Netherlands. Since a view years I have been living with my partner in between Amsterdam and Tel Aviv, but we travel a lot over the whole world.
I first started working as a model for a great dutch photographer Erwin Olaf and worked on many projects. During an acting class at Kemna Casting in Amsterdam I got triggered to explore my visual creativity. That’s when my interest got bigger into photography.
My style is clean but sexual & eyecatching. Most of the time I don’t work in studio. I like to work on location because of the natural light, for example streets, gardens or parks.
My main influences is a dutch photographer Erwin Olaf because of his sexuality and sensitivity in his work he is one of my inspirations.
The digital era on photography
I think the digital world is making the platform for photographers easier. People can see the pictures from their laptop without even being in the same country/city. Because of the whole social network people use it for their work not only to expose their work, but also for acquisition.
Special moments making special pics
It feels like you captured not a staged moment but a real moment. Something that I would like to show my viewers.
It’s the models that give me a career. The emotions and beauty I use in the photo.
The unusual backstages´ moments
I remember in New York during the “Blizzard” in New York in 2015 with Sebastian Sauvé. The weather was crazy while I made a portrait of him. We were standing on top of an extreme high building next to Central Park. Because of the snow and the rain I could hardly see anything through my lens. I was very happy with the results even though the weather didn’t helped me.
The top 5 cool places for a shooting
Like I said, I love to shoot outside because of the natural light. I really like shooting in nature, but I like the darkness as well. One of the series I created called “The night at the park”. I used darkness and night to shoot some great photos.
Besides nature and outside there is not a top 5-list. It really depends on what is crossing my path and where I am heading to with a project.
IMAGE worth a THOUSAND WORDS?
Yes, it is. The picture tells you the whole story. I am working on a project which called “The Barbadian”. It’s about a man who can’t be himself, an outgoing gay in Barbados where gay rights are not the same as in The Netherlands for an example. To show this project to the world, people don’t need to read the words, because the picture will tell the story.
Besides “The Barbadian” I am working on a project called The Israeli soldiers. Those are the people I meet when I am in Israel. People with no modelling background become my muse.
