Lucas Goossens: “I like to have a good connection with the photographer, and by that I mean: we both have to be ‘chill’ and work with each others energy”.
13 set, 2013
The first thing you should know about me is that I’m the designer of LucasPlus Jewelry. I like to think positive and spread good energy, which is why I started making rings, bracelets, and necklaces.
I come from the small historical landmark town Jacksonville, Oregon. Both my parents are French, but I was born in California and lived in Oregon until I graduated valedictorian of my high school, and from there I studied abroad in Belgium for a year. My interests range from the sports I’ve played like fencing and swimming, to nerdy things like making biodiesel for my car (when I had one) and designing in 3D.
Modeling: the first steps in Oregon
When I was 15 years old, I began working at my local coffee shop, and that’s when I started having customers who would tell me “You should be a model” and whatnot. Surprisingly I was never scouted when I traveled around Europe, but when I came home from my travels I knew I was ready.
I walked into the only agency near me in Oregon and said “Hello, I’d like to start modeling.” I remember my first test shoot being one of the most nervous, awkward things for me, but even so, I won an IMTA modeling competition in Los Angeles soon after. It was 4 months into starting my college education at Western Washington University for business and economics, but Wilhelmina Miami was interested in me, so I dropped everything and started my new life!
The best thing about this new start was that it threw me into a world full of professionals, and for the past 2 and a half years I can thoroughly say it has taught me so much about REAL LIFE, to become a more responsible adult, like maintaining good business relationships and just making sure you don’t piss anybody off!
Working with photographers: good connection
I like to have a good connection with the photographer, and by that I mean: we both have to be ‘chill’ and work with each others energy. My favorite thing is when both me and the photographer I’m working with, have complete and utter confidence in how awesome and amazing the pictures will turn out. By thinking that, it becomes that. That being said, I’ve dabbled with nude but only if it feels right. The more modeling shoots I do, the more I realize how it’s all about the energy on set.
The catwalks: tension in the air
Catwalks have always been nerve-racking for me. It’s hours and hours of preparation for a show that lasts minutes, and there’s always tension in the air. My heart is always pounding when I’m on the runway, but I’ve only done it a few times so maybe I’m just not used to it yet. The coolest one I did was for the Adidas NEO Label Fashion Show with Selena Gomez, only because the production team wanted to use me for their promotional video. That was last season in Fall/Winter NYFW’13, where I also walked for Blanc de Chine, and ODD.
When walking down the runway I usually just try to look straight forward, squint my eyes ever so slightly, let my lips relax, and just….walk, all cool-like and purposeful. And also I think of how lucky I am when I’m walking down the runway.
The female models still rule?
Ahhhh yes…it’s always just been a known fact with every model in town: girls earn more than guys. It makes sense, since there are so many more girls in the world buying fashion than guys. I think there are a lot less black models and asian models in the market, but that doesn’t mean things aren’t changing. I can only hope that guys will start being more interested in fashion so that I can continue being a working model!
The models who inspire me are the ones who have made modeling work for their lives.
Lucas´style: a fashionista?
I wouldn’t call myself a fashionista, but I do care about what I look like and how I present myself to other people. My tastes have developed over the course of my life, and I find that the clothes I wear have to mean something to me; for example, I’ve always worn Levi’s 511 jeans because Levi Strauss was THE original denim. He invented it! Plus, it’s based in San Francisco CA, right next to wear I was born.
I love quality, which is why I never wear H&M, everything I’ve ever gotten there is no longer in my closet because buttons fall off, zippers break, fabrics rip, and the shape and color is completely ruined after one wash. My black Converse high tops on the other hand, I’ve had the same ones since freshman year in high school, 8 years!
Imagine u a famous model surrounded by a huge crowd!
I would probably just act modest and take a few pictures, smile, and tell them all to think positive and buy some LucasPlus Jewelry!
Dumbest think u´ve ever heard a model say
A model I met in Milan was bragging about how many google results he had…
Dating x Loving
Dating is no fun compared to being in love.
Can’t do team sports, which is why I like fencing, swimming, and yoga!
If you could have a super power what would it be?
I would be the happiest person on earth (and off) if I could fly.
My favorite superhero was Batman, because Santa gave me a remote control bat mobile for christmas one year.
Atracting someone´s attention
All I gotta do is establish eye contact!
Having fun, enjoying life
I have fun when I’m socializing with friends, making new connections, and making my LucasPlus Jewelry. The most fun I have is when I work (and work should be fun!).
Craziest thing in a summer time season
One summer I went to a 4 day music festival. It was blazing hot, with sweaty people everywhere, no showers, and too much fun.
Fav body part and why
Calves are my favorite; don’t know why, they just are! But hands are by far the most interesting!
I love too many artists to pinpoint a favorite, as long as a song makes me feel good I’ll listen to it.
Fav underwear for daily activities and for those cool sexy moments
I like boxer briefs or undies, like CK and D&G, but I especially like a brand called PullWool (I did their underwear campaign!).
My favorite food is whatever my mom’s making for dinner! Alas…she lives halfway across the world in New Caledonia.
I’m a huge sucker for chocolate, I’ve eaten it every day of my life and I plan to do so for the rest of it! My favorite: Dark with sea salt crystals!
My jewelry is my biggest passion at the moment. I recently got to wear my jewelry for Nylon Magazine in their street style section, so that’ll be the first time LucasPlus will be featured in a magazine! I use Shapeways to produce my jewelry, they’re a 3D Printing marketplace for designers everywhere around the world, and they’ll be featuring my jewelry on their blog and designer spotlight soon!
An unforgettable moment
When I designed my first ring, wore it, and got positive feedback.
Best motto -
“Thank you” !!!
When u´ll come to my world bud?
I’d love to visit Brazil, so let’s hope my mother agency Wilhelmina New York will send me soon!
